Almanacs/Factbooks

  • Statistical information, astronomical or meteorological data, and other useful facts.
    • Baseball Almanac Interactive baseball encyclopedia filled with more than three-hundred thousand pages of in-depth baseball facts, original baseball research, and baseball statistics not found anywhere on the Internet.
    • CIA World Factbook  The Hoover Commission's Clark Committee, set up in 1954 to study the structure and administration of the CIA, reported to Congress in 1955 that: "The National Intelligence Survey is an invaluable publication which provides the essential elements of basic intelligence on all areas of the world. There will always be a continuing requirement for keeping the Survey up-to-date." The Factbook was created as an annual summary and update to the encyclopedic NIS studies.

Atlases

  • Collections of maps.
    • Ohio Landsat 7 Satellite Images Satellite views of Ohio updated regularly; part of OhioLINK's Digital Media Center (consult the yellow database sheet in the library for the username and password).
    • Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps More than 40,000 maps (1847-1970) of Ohio towns and cities. Provided by INFOhio (consult the yellow database sheet in the library for the username and password).
    • Atlapedia Online Contains full color physical maps, political maps, as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.
    • Map Machine Satellite, street maps, and more in National Geographic's online atlas.
    • World Atlas and World Maps Online World Atlas includes the following:
      • Alphabetical Listing of Countries and Continents
      • Blank Outline Maps of Each Country
      • Countries Listed by Continent & Region
      • U.S. States and Territories
      • World Oceans

  • Words of a language, usually arranged alphabetically with pronunciations, meanings, etc.

Encyclopedias

  • Comprehensive, authoritative works containing articles on a wide range of subjects.

    • Encyclopedia Britannica Three encyclopedias (100,000+ articles), atlas, dictionary, images and video clips, reviewed Web sites, magazine articles, and more (consult the yellow database sheet in the library for the username and password).

    • Oxford Reference Online Encyclopedia, timelines, and subject reference (consult the yellow database sheet in the library for the username and password).

    • Encyclopedia Britannica Concise A complete, 28,000 article, single-volume free encyclopedia from the editors of Encyclopedia Britannica.

    • Encyclopedia Smithsonian Helps answer frequently asked questions about the Smithsonian with links to resources on subjects from Art to Zoology.

    • Columbia Encyclopedia Containing nearly 51,000 entries and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references, the current Sixth Edition is among the most complete and up-to-date free encyclopedias ever produced.

    • Internet Public Library* Lists a number of (mostly free) encyclopedias.

    • Library Spot* Lists a number of (mostly free) encyclopedias.

Just For Fun

  • Guinness World Records Online In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Brewery, went on a shooting party and became involved in an argument. Which was the fastest game bird in Europe – the golden plover or the grouse? He realized then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. He was right.

Quotations

  • Collections of quotations searchable by author and subject.
    • Oxford Reference Online Searches for quotations using four Oxford Quotation reference books (consult the yellow database sheet in the library for the username and password).
    • Bartlett's Familiar Quotations A collection of passages, phrases, and proverbs traced to their sources in ancient and modern literature.
    • Quoteland In the summer of 1997, young David Borenstein set out to learn how to create web pages. He decided that a web page of quotes would be interesting. David soon discovered that aside from a few personal pages and one cryptic online book, there was not a quotation resource to be found online. With that in mind, Borenstein set out to fill this void. Now, of course, there are other quotation resources available online, but Quoteland was one of the first.

Reference Desks

  • Sites that allow you to ask experts for research help.
    • Ask An Expert Browse for an expert by category or keyword search. Click the link to visit the expert’s website. Most of the experts have excellent websites with a wealth of information in their area of expertise. Many have even posted answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) so you can get instant information. If you don’t find the answer on the site, submit your question to the expert. Some experts have a special form on their site for this purpose; some simply post their e-mail address. Always be sure to follow proper email etiquette.
    • Homework Spot Ask an expert, divided into general sites, topics, and quick reference.
    • Homework Now Ohio's live online homework help service, offering homework assistance from librarians. Chat with online professional tutors from 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM. Ask to be connected to a tutor for help with all your homework - even Math!
    • Know it Now Ohio's live reference help service, offering assistance for all kinds of tricky questions from professional librarians.
    • Scientific American Answers to intriguing scientific questions are provided. If you have a question for the experts, you can submit it. If your question is worthy, they will post the question and the answer on the site. Homework requests and requests for general information will not be considered.
